If you contact us or have an appointment with us, you will
be treated with total confidentiality
and the utmost sensitivity.
We fully appreciate that personal problems of this nature
can be difficult to discuss, and embarrassing for many people.
On your first visit you will be assessed by one of our consultant
colo-rectal surgeons (Mr. Andrew Clarke or Mr. Michael Lamparelli),
including a full discussion of your problem and a physical
examination. The surgeon may recommend further investigation,
which might include:-
- Colonoscopy or flexible sigmoidoscopy, where
a flexible fibre-optic camera is inserted into the bowel
to assess its general health.
- Diagnostic imaging. These investigations
are performed by our consultant radiologist (Dr. David Tarver)
and include evacuation proctography, to assess the defecation
mechanism, and ultrasound of the anal sphincters.
- Ano-rectal physiology, performed by our physiology
associates to assess the function of the anal sphincters.
Once all the required information has been gathered, the
surgeon will discuss a treatment plan
with you. It may be that advice and simple measures are all
that is necessary. You may be offered specialist
physiotherapy or dietary advice. If these measures
are insufficient, or for more severe problems,
the surgeon may recommend one of a variety of surgical procedures.
Both our colo-rectal surgeons are trained and experienced
in the STARR procedure, which is a
new and relatively non-invasive technique for treating
some forms of rectal prolapse. If it becomes clear that there
is a gynaecological aspect to your problem, the surgeon may
refer you to our consultant gynaecologist (Mr. Tim Hillard),
to manage the gynaecological aspects of your care.
In conclusion, Southern Rectal Surgery offers an integrated
and multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of functional
ano-rectal problems, conducted in a highly professional and
sensitive manner.
